No Country for Old Men

December 8th, 2007 · 2 Comments

I’ve heard that this movie received great reviews, but when JustCara recommended it I had to go see it. I liked this movie but in a different way: I was almost hypnotized by it. The movie is 2 hrs long but if it went on for another two hours, I wouldn’t complain. Something about it kept me glued to the screen. And Tommy Lee Jones is amazing. His voice, Texas accent, slow manner of speech is so contrasting to the bloody action on the screen. This movie reminded me a lot of the other movie with Tommy Lee Jones that I reviewed recently “The three burials of Melquiades Estrada” - similar scenery, very slow, Tommy Lee Jones’ captivating voice.
No Country for Old Men has some of the best camera and sound work I’ve seen in a movie. Even though many of the characters are bad evil people I found that sometimes my sympathies were placed with them. The ending was abrupt, somewhat reminiscent of The Sopranos. The audience lingered for a moment not believing that this was it and expecting a more defined climax. I even overheard someone in the hallway saying that they wanted to watch it again because they certainly missed something. I felt a little bit shortchanged myself. I like my mysteries solved before the movie is over.
For that there is always National Treasure 2.

Glad to read that you liked it. It’s probably my second favorite drama this year - the first being Talk To Me, which was a great biopic (and is now available on DVD).

I tried to get into The Three Burials but I just kept losing interest.

I just saw The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada last night. I too really like Tommy Lee Jones and he was great in this movie. I love movies that go into depth in character analysis. I plan to watch No Country for Old Men as well. Speaking of feeling sympathy for bad evil people (quoting Meesha), if you have not seen “Monster”

    it’s a must see.
