This picture was taken at my daughter’s school in Olathe. There are no kids older than 12 in this school. Do kids that age really dream about world peace? Normal kids wish for a brother or a dog. What is world peace anyway? Reminds me of my childhood when what we wrote wasn’t really what we thought but what was expected.
Why do they do this crap to kids I am not sure. I guess it’s better than teaching creationism but not by much.

I wasnt sure what the big deal was until I clicked on the picture. Your right it is disturbing especially the world trade center drawing. They need to let kids be kids, time enough for all of the bad things when they are grown. Good point and good post.

Kids are a bit more sensitive to stuff like this. I remember when I was a kid, they had that show “Day After Tomorrow” and the networks heavily emphasized that children should not see this show. My parents sent me off to bed when this show came on (this is the same couple that took me to a drive-in when Texas Chainsaw Massacre came out). Naturally, my curiousity was piqued, and I snuck out of my room to see what the fuss was about. I don’t remember the entire movie, but I do remember seeing the A-bomb hit, and some family shutting their dog outside because they felt they needed to save the food for themselves. Scared the hell out of me. I became obsessed with A-bombs being dropped and that my dog would starve because of it.
My point being, with the news taking the sensational angle on everything (we all remember the 24-7 coverage of 9/11), kids are more receptive to that, and have yet to develop the cynicism that we as adults enjoy.
And all kids want a dog if they don’t have one.

I don’t think the kids are being “force fed” necessarily. I agree with Heather, in that kids are influenced by the message of war and destruction more than adults are. Kids don’t seem to forget those messages as easily because they don’t feel they can defend themselves (maybe?).
I remember living through the Cold War. Sure it wasn’t a real war but the threat of violence was real. Was it over blown? Maybe. But if a nuclear war were ever launched the destruction would have been greater than any destruction in the history of the world. I mean think of Hiroshima. That was the only example we had to go on and it was baaaaaad.
When kids wish for peace are they just replaying a message they think they are “supposed to wish for?” I don’t think so. I think they wish for peace because if there were true peace in the world they wouldn’t have to worry about protecting themselves or being protected.
Long comment I know but it’s a complex topic.

I have to agree with Meesha… there were several times in school where we were instructed to perhaps do a drawing but we were given “ideas” of what the drawing should be about.
Makes me scared to send my kid to school. I want him to already have the idea. And they SHOULD wish for a puppy or a brother if they don’t have one. That was the point. That is what little one’s dreams should consist of. little dreams. unbiased, little dreams. Maybe, just maybe, it’s the parent’s fault too if they are letting them intake such things as well. To such an extent that would be the dream… which is even more sad.
Good post.

I don’t disagree that kids may wish for peace but these are well-worn canned statements, clearly someone else’s statements.

We’ll just have to agree to disagree.

I think we have to watch what’s being taught in the schools very carefully these days. I would wonder what the discussion with the kids involved before they did the drawings. At the same time we need to be careful with too much access to television violence, even the news. It’s a delicate balancing act.

I understood the concept of world peace from a very young age… however I do not agree with filling kids up with ideas that are not about learning…
Do you blame the school or the media.
