Remember Hardee’s Monster Thickburgers? The sandwich I bought today at Las Tortugas in KC, KS makes them look like hors d’oeuvre served before the real food is brought out to hungry guests. I wrote before about my fearless trips to unknown and scary areas of this city to procure exotic foods. Most of my food discoveries result from getting lost and trying to find my way back to work without getting killed. Today I was planning to visit some taquerias in the West Bottoms which I noticed when I got lost last week looking for UPS. One wrong exit later I was driving down Central just like Columbus ready to claim this area for Russian Jews. Friendly natives at Las Tortugas did not disappoint. The humongous steak sandwich was full 9 inches in diameter, taking up most of the standard lunch styrofoam container. Loaded with chopped steak, lettuce, tomatoes, onions and refried beans, this sandwich was challenging me to eat it. Apparently American dollar is still holding it’s own in KC, KS. All this food including a pickled jalapeño on the side cost me $4.99. And it was delicious. It will be hard to stay away from this place since they offer “16 tipos de tortas” and that’s before I’ll move on to “platillos mexicanos”. It’s after 8 pm and I am still not hungry.
Another great discovery of today is that Google Maps added Kansas City to it’s new Street View feature. If you never tried Street View and you are easily addicted, please stay away from it.

Here is a street view of the Las Tortugas. Street View uses a special technology to provide a seamless and complete view of the street you are looking at and just like any technology it’s not perfect.
Just don’t zoom in too close:

“was full 9 inches in diameter” did you measure? sometimes the eyes lie… lol ; )
my eyes don’t lie when I measure sandwiches. there are other things I may exaggerate a little.

My husband discovered Las Tortugas and immediately became a regular. He took me two times in one week. I then introduced it to several co-workers. We all love the Tortas and the orchata. I am afraid it will not survive if it doesn’t get more business. Today it was completely empty at 12 noon. I am writing so others might try it.
