Google Reader brought some light rail (tram) news from my hometown of Odessa, Ukraine.
The following was loosely translated by me:
Light Rail Car Rams Five Vehicles: Tram Driver on the route #21 exceeded allowed speed limit and did not take into account driving conditions causing a collision. Five vehicles were involved, one person injured. (Link to Russian Source)
Just a few weeks before that, on June 29th, a light rail car derailed reportedly due to the deformation of the overheated rails. One passenger was killed, 8 others hospitalized including two kids 6 and 9 years old. (Russian-Language source). From several reports I gather that one female passenger was killed when a large piece of glass broken on impact cut her head off. She was possibly peaking through the window.
I am just sayin’!

Meanwhile in the US, 42,642 people were killed in automobile accidents during the last year I could quickly find the numbers for (2006). Light rail could be the death of us all!

DLC, they are plastinating the head right now, to satisfy your morbid curiosity.
May, shit happens everywhere, see stats in comment #3. I just think that KC’ plan to dump a billion dollars on this is just funny. And the images they invoke: nice glass-enclosed cars, beautiful and inviting stations. Why not throw in a severed head or two.
