How I Read the News

This article appeared in the Kansas City Star this morning. I am not linking to them anymore since their links expire and I have to delete them, so I am copying the full text here. Please pay attention:

Mother scolds child, crashes car

A 29-year-old Lawrence woman suffered minor injuries when she crashed her car while scolding her daughter.
Emily Frances Smith was eastbound on the Kansas Turnpike near Lawrence about 7:40 p.m. Thursday when she turned around to scold her daughter. In the process, Smith pulled the steering wheel to the left, according to a crash report.
Smith over corrected and her 2001 Subaru station wagon struck the barrier wall several times, according to the report.
Smith was taken to a hospital. Her daughter was uninjured, according to the report. The vehicle was disabled in the crash and towed.

What did you get from the article? Probably exactly what it says - a woman turned away to yell at her kid, lost control of the vehicle, almost got them both killed.

What did I get from the article? A woman volunteered unnecessary information to police that will probably get her in trouble with the law, possibly charged  with reckless driving, endangerment, etc. and already made her look stupid in the paper. I don’t know any people who concentrate on the road one hundred percent of the time, we all do distracting things - eat, make phone calls, look around, look at other drivers, the luckiest among us are having sex, so this woman is no different than people who leave retarded comments about her on the Star’s website.

What is inexcusable, is the fact that all she had to say to the cop was something about a problem with steering or suspension, or, in the worst case, say nothing. Why voluntarily confess your own stupidity and make your lawyer’s job that much harder. So the main point of the article is not what it actually says, but it’s what it should say: keep your mouth shut!

And that’s how I read the news….

If you’re gonna lie to the cops (and they will ask “so what happened here, ma’am?”), you gotta kill all the witnesses. I doubt the daughter was in quite that much trouble.

You don’t have to lie, just say:I don’t know what happened, I lost control, which is true. It’s unlikely anyone on the hwy witnessed what happened inside the car and that police will interrogate the kid.
