KC Star- Ad Blocked

July 24th, 2008 · 5 Comments

I am not an avid reader of the KC Star’s website but, but if you live around here it’s hard to avoid. I understand that they don’t charge for the pleasure of using their website so I didn’t mind all the horrible looking blinking ads they place everywhere, thinking that they have to make money one way or another. I was patient when they started pop-ups, I just used pop-up blocker and missed probably 9 out of 10 intrusions. I was patient when they started placing ads with sounds and videos, I stopped them and turned the sound down. I was even patient when they displayed things like this probably in order to turn away the terrorists.

My patience ran out when they started to use moving ads that will roll out to the middle of the screen and stay there until I clicked to close them.

So I installed AdBlock Plus for the Firefox and I don’t see any more ads, banners, blinking things, moving targets; I don’t hear noises, clicks and pops; I can just read the news and move on. Another proof that being understanding doesn’t pay. After insisting on nickel-and-diming me with annoyances they are getting neither nickel nor a dime.

My English teacher would be proud of me using “neither/nor” here.

So true. I want to punch the KC Star’s online ad placement guys in the face.

Ugh I haven’t been to the Stars site in a while, that bites. Gonna download that blocker right now, thanks.

I stopped reading the Star back after the Virginia Tech shooting incident happened, and they refused to remove the image of the shooter from their front page. (The one where he’d taken a picture of himself aiming the gun at the camera? Yeah, that one…) I haven’t missed it one bit.

As someone in advertising, I have no problem with online ads in theory. I HATE and will NEVER place a flashy, obnoxious, blinking pain in the ass ad ever. I promise. Besides, search engine marketing is much more effective and way less intrusive than banner ads.

I never view the star at their site. Use an RSS reader and miss all the wonderful junk they throw at you.
