Poll of the Week: Recycling Gone Pad

July 30th, 2008 · 2 Comments

I really wasn’t planning on doing a poll today. Only 13 people voted in the last one so I get the message: too many polls. My plans changed when I was at the UPS location earlier today and saw a woman shipping something in the giant box that used to contain feminine hygiene products. It’s safe to assume (well, maybe not safe) that the original content of the box was not inside. Why would someone ship a box of these things anywhere? So I put myself in place of the recipient of said parcel and thought that it may be slightly embarrassing to receive such a package. If you are a man or a woman, a giant colorful box of maxi-pads sitting on your porch or delivered to work c/o security guard is capable of ruining your day. I know all about recycling and I routinely reuse mailing supplies, but please, if you have to mail me something, use unmarked boxes. I’ll buy my own pads.

Is It Appropriate to Mail a Parcel in an Embarrassing Packaging?

I have a pretty high tolerance for weird stuff in the mail. For a few years, a friend and I would compete with each other to see who could get the other person signed up on the weirdest of mail lists. Everything from free samples to weird religious propaganda to a colon cleansing trial kit. I’m surprised neither of us ever thought to mail something in a maxi pad box, but I’m also surprised they accepted it.

I think it would have been fun in my old office, which was kinda proper, to go around with a big colorful box showing maxi pads and saying, “It’s Christmastime in the office! Line up for your hygiene products!” My boss would have died.
