Happy New Year!

September 29th, 2008 · 5 Comments

Today is the Rosh Hashanah or Jewish New Year 5769 as it’s known to the rest of you Gentiles. Here is a video with the song about the holiday and a display of traditional items associated with Rosh Hashanah. I don’t understand the words but the title says so and the song is nice.

After reading the article about the New Year celebration I realized that I violated most of the traditions: I worked and in an unfortunate bit of timing I smoked a pork shoulder all day, cleverly disguised by two chickens so my indiscretions can’t be seen from heavens.

Chicken

In other Rosh Hashanah-related news:although there are only 43 Jewish members of Congress, everyone takes a few days off to celebrate with them, which may give legislators some time to stand back and ponder the “bailout”. I was surprised that the desire to save one’s ass and be re-elected won over the party loyalty, which is actually the way it’s supposed to work. Maybe the Congress will have some time to digest this:

…some of the most basic details, including the $700 billion figure Treasury would use to buy up bad debt, are fuzzy.”It’s not based on any particular data point,” a Treasury spokeswoman told Forbes.com Tuesday. “We just wanted to choose a really large number.”

I am thinking of a number…

    L’shanah Tovah!

After the apples, honey, challah and pomegranate/acai juice I’m all woozy from the sugar. :)

Good looking birds, and you are probably going to hell for cooking swine on a jewish holiday, save me a seat if you get there first.

The song in the video seems to be bashanah haba’ah, an Israeli song who’s title means “in the year to come.” However, most of the song is not in Hebrew, and I must say I don’t recognize the language, though it sounds like it could be Yiddish (I don’t know nearly enough Yiddish to be sure).

    Happy new year!
