the ironic - okay; stupid - part of the U.S. involvement in the Afghanis is that we used the cia to suck the soviets into Afghanistan in the 80s in the first place. we did this by arming and financing al queda (and, yes, bin Laden) to do our fighting by proxy the entiriety of the russo-afghani conflict...

so...what i want to know is...did anyone at the cia or the pentagon keep notes? you know, on what NOT to do? or didt he notes get lost? or did Cheney burn those notes so Bush couldn't read them?

fuckin' insanity. i've posted elsewhere that once bin Laden "escaped" we should have quit the country and I don't feel any differently today. no matter what we do, we're going to leave one day, and all the "good" we accomplish in the interim will be paid back to the natives hundreds of times over after our departure...

The best way to win in Afghanistan is probably to kill the folks that need killing and get the heck out. We're learning the lessons we didn't bother to pick up from the Soviets, which they didn't bother to pick up from the British. The Afghans historically have not tolerated foreign rule.

I think Gates has it right in downgrading what "winning" should look like in Afghanistan compared to Iraq. Unfortunately, those poor women in that godforsaken country will surely suffer. And then there's Pakistan, another nightmare.
