April Fools is called a Day of Humor or a Day of Laughter in Russian and the city where I was born – Odessa – is considered a capital of humor and laughter in Russia and Ukraine and who knows where else. When I was growing up®,the celebrations weren’t as elaborate or expensive and it certainly wasn’t a day off like it is today, but it was a nice tradition that really didn’t require anything fancy to be enjoyable. Indeed, I’ve heard reports that some of the recent celebrations turned into borderline drunken riots and people in the know avoid the city center if they can.
