Didn’t read it,but many people were predicting it. It was harder to predict for the outsider since they had inflated image of what was going on (like in Iraq). I am pretty sure they could’ve lasted longer if they were willing to run tanks over the demostrators like they did in China.

Taking things back to 1990 wouldn’t work. Presumably, the USSR collapsed so quickly because it had been weakening for some time. Andrei Amalrik had predicted 80-85 in 1969. Not bad if you consider that North Korea for instance is going, well, if not strong, it’s still going.
