Poll of the Week:Late Merging

June 9th, 2008 · 7 Comments

With local highways in permanent state of repair I am reminded of my long time pet peeve - late mergers. These are the smart asses who ride the closed lane all the way to the merge point and then try to force themselves between the drivers who actually obeyed the signs. Apparently there are technologies in existence allowing for the late merge and dynamic late merge but as far as I can tell they are not used in this area. So in every construction zone there is a battle of wills between drivers who are trying their luck merging late and drivers who are willing to rear-end a car in front of them before they let said merge to happen. There are no winners in this battle except for the car repair shops.

Recently a local attorney fought a late merge-related ticket and won but some KC Star readers were not so understanding.

Sometimes I feel gutsy and straddle the two lanes so that the pricks really have to go out of their way to get past.

Yeah I totally do that as well Chimpo. Most of the ass-clowns won’t risk their ride squeezing between my pickup and a concrete barrier.

But NEVER play that game with somebody driving a car held together with duct tape. That bastard is HOPING you scrape him so he can sue.

Fucking jeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeerks. I like those truckers who block that extra lane space. Dickwads.
    That’s all.

I have yet to understand why people think it’s not cool for people to use a lane that’s open for as long as they are able to. So they merge later than earlier. So the hell what? If everyone gets over early, and no one uses that lane, the lane everyone is merging into would be stopped up for longer because there would be more cars in it. DUH.

Just let the people merge when they want to (be it early or late) and get on with your lives already. I’m a fan of the late merge, and I won’t deny I’ve done it all my life without feeling a bit guilty about it.

I have a one-car policy regarding merges of this sort. I let one person in. Everybody else can get bent.

Faith, there is a system like that and it works like a zipper - cars from each lane take turns merging, but it has to be set up that way by DOT. Otherwise people who merged early obeying the signs are watching someone pass them and then try to butt in slowing the process even more. Then it becomes a sport to make the late mergers wait as long as possible by not letting them in.

I don’t merge late, but it’s not a bid deal to me when others do.
