This somewhat bugged me for the past few weeks: when someone with unknown phone number calls but doesn’t leave a message, do you get an urge to call back and ask “did you just call me”? I am not talking about some obvious telemarketing or out-of-the-area numbers, these are local 816 or 913 numbers. Maybe there was an emergency and someone called from a friend’s phone and couldn’t hold on; or maybe the one and only future love of your life called while you were trying to overflow the pool by jumping in it, and she was too shy to leave a message. Maybe it was your work letting you know that you were fired or promoted. It could have been the lab letting you know you don’t have the clap, or you are not pregnant, or maybe you are…. Anyway, I had to fight the urge to call back and find out few times in recent weeks.

Answering the phone is always optional as far as I’m concerned. As Joe Walsh said, “Just leave a message, maybe I’ll call.”
